Every Saturday, without fail, the family arrives and parks the van between the barn and riding arena to get as close as possible. When the van door opens, lifted out of the seat and into a wheelchair is 14-year-old Mariah Rook who is wheeled up the ramp onto a wooden platform. My story and photos on Take the Reins Equine Assisted Ministry for Kids in Thompson’s Station, Tennessee is one of my favorites. Having spent many hours assisting in therapeutic riding lessons, not a day goes by that I’m not amazed at the power of the horse and human connection.
